10 Common Household Items That You Should Be Recycling

Broughshire Waste Metals • Apr 04, 2023

Recycling is a vital part of helping out the environment. With waste management services and recycling companies in most communities, there are few limits on what you can recycle nowadays. Here are 10 things that you will definitely find in your house that you should be recycling!

Wine Corks

Wine bottles are easily recycled, however, the cork can also be re-used! They can be used for decorations and crafts, or you can recycle them, where they will be reused as a sustainable material.

Crayons

If you are a family with children who have outgrown their crayons and crafts, recycling is a great opportunity to ensure they don't go to landfill. Recycling programs can help repurpose them, giving them to schools across the country.

Toothbrushes

Toothbrushes often end up in landfill, never decomposing. However, you can recycle your toothbrushes! You can also try bamboo toothbrushes, made from sustainable materials.

CDs & DVDs

You may have a load of old discs that are sitting collecting dust and you want to get rid of them. Instead of just chucking them out, take them down to a recycling centre where they can be repurposed.

Cosmetic Products

Your empty cosmetic bottles can definitely be recycled! Many stores now offer incentives where you can trade in your empties in return for vouchers or discounts!

Phones

Your phones and other electronics, like computers, can be recycled. Either for their parts, or they can be scrapped for their metals.

Christmas Lights

Even though your holiday lights are only being used once a year, you don’t need to throw them away. However, if you are looking to get rid of them, most parts of your lights can be salvaged and reused.

Ink & Toner Cartridges

The cartridges from your printer can go to a recycling centre instead of sitting in a landfill site. Some companies will offer an incentive or a discount for recycling too!

VHS Tapes

Your old school tapes may not be something you want to keep around anymore, in which cae, you can take them to a local recycling centre, along with things like CDs and DVDs.

Bikes

So many bikes are sent to landfill and wasted, however there are plenty of recycling centres that will take your unused bike! Or, if you want your bike to continue being used, you can always donate your bike to a scheme where it can be recycled to someone who might want it!
