Can Fridge Freezers Be Recycled?

Broughshire Waste Metals • 8 December 2022

Every household or commercial appliance, no matter how new or old, will reach a point when it no longer functions as intended. After all, nothing lasts forever. Be it a hi-fi system, oven or radio, even the most reliable of companions will meet their maker eventually. Most equipment is relatively straightforward to dispose of, however, certain items may leave you scratching your head; fridge freezers often fall into the latter category.

If it’s finally time to say goodbye to your business or home’s old fridge, you might be wondering what to do with it. Can a fridge be recycled? And, if so, how can you do it?

Here at Broughshire Waste Metals, we’ve put together a quick guide to help answer these burning questions.

Read on to find out more.

Should Refrigerators Be Recycled?

Firstly, you may be wondering whether freezers and refrigerators need to be recycled here in the UK. It is important to understand that, according to the UK government’s Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment regulations, cooling equipment must be recycled where possible. In order to conform with the WEEE recycling regulations, those disposing of such goods should ensure it is done so responsibly.

However, this is not entirely the responsibility of the end user, and it is not financed by taxpayers. In fact, the manufacturers and distributors of the goods are largely responsible for ensuring they are recovered, reused and recycled wherever possible.

How Should I Dispose Of My Old Fridge Freezer?

So, how should you get rid of a fridge freezer? Of course, you can’t just leave it out in the street and presume it will be collected. If you have access to a vehicle large enough to safely transport your appliance, then it is a good idea to drive it to a local waste management and recycling centre. There, professionals will be able to ensure that your old fridge is disposed of in a way that is environmentally friendly and responsible.

However, if you don’t have access to a large vehicle or van, or have a number of old cooling units that require disposal, you’ll need to reach out to a local waste management company such as ourselves and arrange a collection.
