How To Be More Eco-Friendly This Summer

Broughshire Waste Metals • 12 July 2022

Although summer generally has less of a damaging effect on the planet in comparison to its frosty counterpart, there are several aspects of the hotter months of the year which contribute massively to global warming. From jetting off in jumbo jets powered by harmful fuels to filling up paddling pools with litres of water, there are several changes you can make in your summer routine to reduce the impact you have on the planet.

Enjoy a Holiday Closer to Home

Travelling to a new country is exciting, but it can also be extremely damaging to the planet. Planes are particularly bad as they run on fossil fuels which release harmful CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.

Consider holidaying a little closer to home and exploring the beautiful sights that England has to offer. You could stay in a cosy cottage in the countryside, or a campsite surrounded by luscious greenery, which can make for a much more relaxing holiday than a busy resort abroad.

Host a Meat Free BBQ

The meat and dairy industry accounts for roughly 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions, making it a driving factor in the contribution of global warming. Water and air pollution, loss of wildlife and natural habitats all stem from food production. Not only this, but food waste produces 3.3 billion tons of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change.

A meat free BBQ is a fun activity which promotes reducing your meat intake while spending quality time with friends and family. You can still make all of the classic BBQ foods like hot dogs and burgers by simply swapping regular meat for vegan alternatives. However, if giving up meat is simply not feasible for you, consider buying meat from your local farmer’s market to eliminate long shipping journey’s.

Conserve Water

As hot weather is so rare in England, it is only natural to want to be near a source of water at all times during these scorching days.

However, during these hot days, water consumption rockets in England, creating a negative impact on the environment. While it is important that you keep yourself hydrated during summer, avoid wasting water.

You can do this by:

●     Repairing dripping taps

●     Keep your showers short

●     Fill a jug of water and keep it in the fridge rather than waiting until the tap turns cold
