Surprising Things You Didn’t Know Could Be Recycled

Broughshire Waste Metals • 7 July 2021

With landfills overflowing and new facts about environmental hazards coming out all the time, recycling needs to be at an all time high. However, many people don’t even realize what they can recycle, so they haven’t started doing it. There are some surprising things on this list!

Batteries

Not all batteries can be recycled, but many of them can. Rechargeable batteries, as well as a number of single use batteries can be recycled. You can also recycle large batteries, such as car or motorcycle batteries.

Bio-Plastic Bags

Biodegradable plastic bags and other containers are considered compostable, but they rarely break down in the relatively low heat of home compost piles. However, in an industrial setting, they’ll break down much faster and this can mean they are better sent to a compost facility for “recycling.”

Clothing

While clothes are generally thought of as something to donate, even worn out items and those old jeans with the tears in them can be recycled. Some recycling companies are entirely based around old clothing and fabric items.

Eyeglasses

What did you do with your glasses last time they broke? If you threw them away, then keep in mind that this isn’t necessary. After all, the frames are usually plastic, which can be recycled, as can the glass. If the lenses are still intact, you can often have them placed in a new set of frames and essentially recycle them yourself.

Computers

Don’t throw that old computer away, even if it no longer works. Computers are full of reusable parts and recyclable materials. They do need to be disposed of with care, as they contain potentially harmful chemicals.

Ink Cartridges

You knew that some ink cartridges could be refilled, but did you know they can also be recycled? Check with a nearby office supply company to find out how they recycle them. The cartridges may be reused, or their components broken down for recycling, depending on the situation.

Razor Blades

As a metal, your razor blade can be recycled in most cases. In fact, even disposable razors may be recyclable in some areas, since the handles are made of plastic. They simply need to be separated.

Fluorescent Light Bulbs

Most people don’t use fluorescent bulbs anymore, but if you have some around, they can be recycled. It’s important to take care with them, as they do contain dangerous chemicals.

Motor Oil

Every time you change your oil, you have to dispose of the old oil. Since it can be tricky to do this, due to regulations protecting the environment, why not recycle it. Most areas have a way to recycle motor oil, whether from a commercial source or for individuals.

Not all recycling centres can handle all the different types of recycling, but it’s worth asking what is handled. You may be surprised at what you can safely recycle. Want to learn more about recycling? Contact Broughshire for more information.
