Ten Things You Can Recycle Today

Broughshire Waste Metals • 12 April 2022

Do you make good use of your recycling bin? If you find that the regular bins are too small for your recycling, it may be time to look into something more substantial, such as a waste recycling centre. But first, consider what you can actually recycle.

Paper

All types of paper can be recycled, including construction paper, drawing paper, and newsprint. Your old magazines, books, etc. can all be recycled and turned into new paper products. The only things that you should not include in the recycling are paper towels and such which have been used to soak up the grease.

Metal

Nearly every type of metal can safely be recycled into new ingots for use in making more metal products. From automobiles to aircraft and food containers, metal can be reused multiple times.

PVC

When you’re renovating a home or demolishing one, you’ll likely have extra PVC pieces, including windows and doors. This type of plastic can actually be recycled and turned into pipes, more windows and doors, as well as other plastic products.

Wood

Did you know that wood can also be recycled? It makes sense since the most paper is made from wood pulp, so at the very least, it can be used this way. However, it can also be used in other applications, such as creating furniture and art.

Cardboard

Like paper, cardboard can be recycled. No matter what type of cardboard, there should be a way to reuse it. The recycling plant will often turn this into a paper of some sort, but it may be used to create more cardboard or something else that will be equally useful.

Polythene

Polythene is usually found in the carrier bags found in UK supermarkets. At first glance, you may think it’s non-recyclable, but it actually can be recycled. Most supermarkets will accept the bags back, but you can also bring them to a recycling centre and they will handle the recycling process.

Appliances

Do you have a washing machine or freezer that is no longer functional? These heavier appliances can be difficult to get rid of and they’re too big to put into regular recycling bins. However, if you contact a recycling company like Broughshire, we can help you haul them away.

Electronics

Old computers and other types of electronics cannot simply be thrown away. They have potentially hazardous contents and this means they need to be disposed of with care. However, some recycling centres are set up to handle more hazardous materials and can ensure the electronics are disposed of properly after having been stripped of any recyclable parts.

Plastic

Regular plastic may or may not be recycled, depending on the type. Check the bottom of any container to see if it has the familiar triangle of arrows to indicate it can be recycled.
