Waste Management Acronyms To Remember
Waste management is no easy undertaking, with plenty of waste types and unique materials to consider, a selection of important tips worth remembering, alongside an ever-changing landscape as we collectively strive to reduce our carbon footprints. Much of the loaded terminology within this subject is broken down into acronym form, to simplify matters, or rather confuse those who are unfamiliar. Let Broughshire Waste Metals take you through some of the most commonly encountered acronyms concerning recycling and waste reduction.
WEEE (Waste Electrical And Electronic Equipment Recycling)
This acronym relates to an area of the recycling industry specialising in unwanted or unused electronic goods. This may involve everything from large household appliances such as refrigerators and ovens, to personal computers and home gadgets. Typically, this type of waste will be difficult to recycle, however, we are able to do so at our waste management centre.
HCRW (Healthcare Risk Waste)
As the title would suggest, healthcare risk waste is any waste which would pose a risk to the general health of someone making contact with it, or interacting with it. This may include infectious materials, sharp objects, corrosive substances and much more. We ask that you contact us before visiting the site with any such waste, and we will be available to advise you on the best course of action.
PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
Though you may be familiar with personal protective equipment from the COVID-19 pandemic, such helpful equipment stretches far beyond simply facemasks. Useful within waste management are eye protectors, helmets, and comprehensive dust masks with respirators, while there are plenty of other protective clothing options for optimal safety around harmful substances.
SEA (Strategic Environmental Assessment)
A SEA will be conducted for building projects, construction work, and other manual changes made to land, most prominently to judge environmental impact of prospective changes. Completed to minimise potential waste and create a more sustainably functioning final result, an environmental assessment should highlight any areas in which sustainable materials could be used as a substitute, or excess can be reduced.
GHG (Greenhouse Gas)
Greenhouse gases are any gases which absorb and emit radiant energy within a particular range, contributing to the harmful ‘greenhouse effect’ which is causing the earth to grow warmer over time, with potentially catastrophic consequences. One way in which we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions is by opting for sustainable solutions when possible, such as shunning single-use plastics, and repurposing otherwise unrequired objects and furniture.
