What Counts as Scrap Metal for Recycling?
When you think of scrap metal, you may think of chunks of metal that are simply sitting about, waiting to be picked up. The reality is far more difficult since metal is usually already made into something. You need to identify which types of metal are found in different items so you may determine which pieces are useful as scrap.
Copper
This metal is frequently found in old plumbing pipes, as well as pots and pans made from copper. However, the biggest source is cables. Many power cables, computer cables and extension cords use copper.
Steel
One of the more common metals used in recycling is steel. It can be found in vehicle parts, shipping containers, paint cans and demolished buildings. It’s quite common to recycle, so you’ll find plenty of it around.
Stainless Steel
As a nonferrous metal, stainless steel is 70% iron and a minimum of 8% nickel. Washing machines, refrigerators, cookers, cookware, and sinks are just a few household items that contain stainless steel.
Aluminium
This light metal is found in cans for sodas, of course, but it is also found in many window frames and bicycles. Motorcycles and auto bonnets may also contain aluminium. Fencing, cookware, and even broken electronics can all contain aluminium.
Brass
Similar to copper in looks, brass can be found in old door knobs and drawer pulls. It is also found in pipes and older bed frames, among other things. Some vintage wall ornaments and statues may also include brass.
Lead
Known for its versatility and weight, lead is usually found in pipes and wheel weights. While lead has a bad reputation, it is still useful in some areas, so if you come across some, consider recycling it.
Cast Iron
Most cast iron is now found in cookware, but if you have older house demolitions. It was used in boilers and furnaces and can be recovered from these.
What should you do with scrap metal? The simplest thing is to recycle it. This helps ease the load on mines and reduces the amount of metal that must be produced from scratch. Instead, it allows for an eco-friendlier option.
