What Can Be Made From Scrap Metal?

Broughshire Waste Metals • 7 September 2021

Scrap metal is a combination of waste metal, metallic material and any product containing metal that is capable of being recycled. Scrap metal can come from vehicle parts, building supplies or surplus manufacturing materials and it’s highly valuable. Recycling scrap metal has many benefits for the environment and the UK’s metal recycling industry is also worth upwards of £5.6 billion!

Many different types of metal can be recycled, including copper, aluminium and brass, but what actually happens to these scrap metal products? There are many different uses for scrap metal, so if you want to know more, read on for our handy guide.

Train tracks

The majority of scrap metal is sourced from cars, but it can then be recycled to create other modes of transport. Train tracks are largely made from recycled steel, as the metal can be recycled over and over again without losing its strength.

Aeroplane parts

Aeroplanes need to be as lightweight as possible, so they use aluminium rather than steel. Tin cans are also made of aluminium and they make up a large proportion of this recycled metal. Believe it or not, many passenger planes and fighter aircraft contain parts made from recycled tin cans!

Artwork

Scrap metal can be used to create amazing artwork, including Steampunk-style sculptures, decorative models and wall hangings. Nuts, bolts, springs, old vehicle parts and domestic metal waste items are all used by artists to create their pieces. Animals are very popular subjects for scrap metal sculptures and you can find everything from birds, to horses, lions and sea creatures.

Home furnishings

Scrap metal can be used to make entire pieces of furniture, or it can be combined with other materials like wood. You can find everything from chairs, to clocks, tables and garden items made from scrap metal. Scrap metal pieces are one of a kind and a great way to add some unique style to your home.
